In the home

The main aim of the South Yorkshire Energy Efficiency Advice Centre is to improve the energy performance of households within South Yorkshire.  This helps you to save money on your utility bills and helps us to achieve government targets to reduce CO2 emissions.    The UK has committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2010 and seeks a 60% reduction in emissions by 2050.  By committing to save the energy you use every day, you can help prevent climate change and achieve UK targets.  There are simple ways to reduce your emissions.  By improving the energy performance of your home you can significantly reduce your CO2 emissions and your annual utility bills.

Affordable warmth

About one third of householders suffer from what has been termed as fuel poverty – where 10% of a households income is spent on heating the home.  This can significantly affect the most vulnerable members of our society.  Many homes in Britain are so inefficiently heated, and poorly insulated, that it is incredibly difficult to keep them warm.

Cold homes have repeatedly been linked to ill health and early deaths.  Studies have found the UK winter death rate is around 30% higher than the rest of the year, with the majority of excess winter deaths being among pensioners.  With so much ill health caused by cold homes, an additional burden inevitably falls on the health service that must treat hundreds of thousands of people whose illness is directly linked to the lack of a few simple measures to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.  It is estimated that treating cold related illness costs the NHS £1 billion pounds every year.
